10 years ago: THW in New Orleans with 15 large pumps after Katrina

More than 1800 fatalities, hundreds of thousands of refugees and 80 per cent of New Orleans flooded: Hurricane Katrina, which hit the south coast of the USA on 29 August 2005, was one of the worst natural disasters in the country's history. The German government instructed its technical relief agency, the Technisches Hilfswerk (THW), to step in, and ten days later the THW had its first heavy-duty pumps up and running in New Orleans. Six weeks later some 130 THW workers had pumped away five million cubic metres of water – enough to fill 2000 Olympic swimming pools.
In several West African countries THW contributed to the fight against Ebola: In Benin the volunteers of THW supported the construction of a base camp.

Ebola-epidemic: THW operations completed – results

Since March 2014 several states in West Africa have been fighting against Ebola. In the last nine months, the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) has supported the international aid operations with more than 70 volunteers from the technical-logistical sector. Yesterday, Sunday, the remaining two experts returned from Sierra Leone via Ghana to Germany – time to take stock.

Ebola epidemic: THW's investigators back from West Africa

In the last few days, the two reconnaissance teams from THW returned from West Africa to Germany. On behalf of the Federal Government, since the beginning of October, they had investigated on site how THW can support the fight against the Ebola epidemic.
The concrete and safe handling of ladders is part of the training in Tunisia.

Export hit honorary office: start of third training course in Tunisia

Since this week, more than 50 Tunisian volunteers have expressed their delight in honorary office commitment during the third training unit in Ben Arous near Tunis. Until the beginning of November, with the support of THW-staff, the volunteers will undergo THW’s basic training, aligned to local circumstances. At the launch on Monday, the German ambassador to Tunisia visited the project.
