THW Supports Police Mission in Sudan
At the request of the Foreign Office, a three-man THW team will support the preparations of the Senegalese police for the UN peace mission in the Sudanese region of Darfur. In the following three months, the THW team, which consists of a logistician, a mechanic and a medical expert, will educate a police unit (FPU) in the handling and maintenance of technical equipment and vehicles. Furthermore, they will support Senegalese authorities in the logistics management of material and equipment transport. The mission is financed by the Foreign Office.

For their mission in the operational area, which is about 4,000 kilometres away, the forces of the Senegalese Formed Police Unit (FPU) will be equipped with new vehicles and equipment by the Foreign Office. The task of the THW team is to take over the theoretical and practical introduction to the technology. To this end, the THW has developed a training concept which was based on previous THW missions – for example in Sierra Leone. Among other things, the programme includes driving lessons for driving on desert sand. Today, on Wednesday, the classes will start for the medical support personnel of the FPU. In the framework of a course, six nurses and two doctors will be introduced to the newly acquired medicine technology.
The task of the THW logistician is the preparation of the transport by sea of vehicles and equipment to Port Sudan. To this end, first the entire equipment will be checked against UN standards. Then the packing lists for container accommodation, sanitary facilities, power generators, vehicles, medical equipment, water supply, stationary material, communication equipment and police and safety equipment will be put together.
