“Today’s International Volunteer Day puts the importance of voluntary commitment in the limelight for the public. It reminds the public of the fact that more than 20 million people in Germany commit themselves to voluntary work”, said THW-President, Mr Albrecht Broemme, in Bonn today. “It should not be the aim to hammer our thanks home to these people year-in, year-out. In fact, today shall be a call to all of us to become active – irrespective of age, sex or belief!”
The European Union chose 2011 to be the European year of voluntary commitment. To this, the closing event took place in Berlin on 2nd December, which included the award of the prize “Helping Hand” by the Federal Minister of the Interior, Dr. Hans-Peter Friedrich. THW’s local sections of Kulmbach and Siegen were awarded by the Federal Minister of the Interior for their special commitment in the categories “Innovative Concepts” and “Youth and Junior Programmes”.
