For the volunteers the year 2011 started with a lot of work: Floods in large parts of Germany and the ship average on the Rhine near St. Goar kept them busy. Serious train accidents as well as storm operations after the extremely heavy rainfall in July and August lead to further operations across Germany.
In March the serious earthquake off the Japanese coast and the ensuing reactor disaster happened. The Rapid Deployment Unit for Salvage Operations Abroad was in Japan to save lives – sadly to no avail. Nevertheless, the operations showed, once again, how much the international community relies on each other and how important international cooperation in civil protection is. The EU-Mechanism, which makes a huge contribution, celebrated its tenth anniversary this year. Additionally, THW operated in Ethiopia, Pakistan, Thailand, Cyprus and in South-Sudan in 2011.
THW would like to extend its thanks to its volunteers, its staff as well as to all those who supported its work for their commitment in the previous year. For 2012, THW wishes you health, happiness and the strength which allows you to carry on with your important contribution to German civil protection. In 2012, THW will, once again, be ready to operate in order to protect the citizens: 24 hours a day and, this time, even on 366 days a year.
