Prior to this, an investigation team with THW experts had travelled to Ethiopia to assess in talks with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) support possibilities to be provided by THW. The investigation team came to the result that, in the light of the extent of the hunger crisis, urgent actions are needed and that THW could provide practical help. Thereupon, today on Friday, the Federal Ministry of the Interior gave the go-ahead for the delegation of a task force to Ethiopia.
The Federal Minister of the Interior, Dr. Hans-Peter Friedrich, explained: “Every day, more starving people arrive at the refugee camps. With THW as a proven and reliable partner, we can help to better equip the refugee camps and to mitigate the hardships.”
With the Standing Engineering Capacity (SEC), THW has an operative unit, which quickly and efficiently provides technical and logistical support in setting up the camps. Among other things, the tasks will comprise the improvement and repair of electricity, sanitary equipment and water supply and infrastructure measures.
The Federal Agency for Technical Relief is the operational organisation of the Federal Government for civil protection, based on the work of more than 80,000 operational staff members and about 800 full-time employees. For many years, THW has focused on providing technical and logistical help at home and abroad by resorting to its technical expertise and special equipment. In the past six decades, THW has been active world-wide in more than 130 countries to provide humanitarian emergency help, participate in projects and see to relief goods transport.
