THW sends Team to Bangkok to support Embassy
On behalf of the Federal Government, the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) sent two flood experts Friday evening to support the German Embassy in Bangkok. There, they support the embassy staff in presenting the situation and in assessing relief measures. Since mid-August, heavy and prolonged rain fall as well as numerous tropical storms have led to large-scale flooding in South East Asia.

Meanwhile, more than eight million people in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and the Philippines have been affected by the floods. In Thailand alone one third of the country is flooded; hundreds and thousands of people have fled or have lived in emergency accommodation for weeks. In Bangkok, too, many of the inhabitants are directly affected. At the request of the crisis staff of the Federal Government at the Foreign Office, THW therefore sent two flood experts on Friday, who will support the Germany Embassy as expert advisors.
The Federal Agency for Technical Relief is the operational organisation of the Federation for civil protection. Its work is based on the commitment of more than 80,000 volunteers and about 800 full-time employees. For many years, THW has focused on the provision of technical and logistical help, including the international level, by resorting to its expertise and special equipment. In the past six decades, THW has been deployed across the world in more than 130 countries in the sectors of humanitarian emergency relief, projects and relief items traffic. Among other things, THW operated in South and South East Asia after the tsunami-disaster of 2004.
