Syria crisis: THW supports UNHCR

Against the background of the crisis in the Arabic country, the neighbouring countries of Syria react to the increasing flow of refugees. In Jordan, THW supports the preparation of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in building refugee camps.

The five-member THW-team has been in the Jordan capital of Amman since the weekend and has organised a camp construction course, together with the UNHCR. Thus, the construction of a refugee camp near Mafraq is being prepared. At the same time, the THW-experts investigate technical solutions for the supply and treatment of water for the Syrian refugees.

Since April, THW has been active in Amman and supported, among others, the German Embassy in assessing the humanitarian situation on site. At the request of the Foreign Office, THW was commissioned by the Federal Ministry of the Interior to support the Syrian refugees by cooperating with the Jordan authorities and relief organisations as well as the German Embassy in Amman.
Both national institutions and authorities and representatives of national and international organisations will take part in the training in Amman. The territory near Mafraq is situated in the border area to Syria and was visited by the THW-team on Monday.

THW is the emergency response organisation of the Federal Republic of Germany in civil protection. 99 per cent of its work is supported by volunteers. Thanks to its technical expertise and special equipment, THW is an important partner of the fire brigade, police and other relief organisations in Germany, Europe and worldwide. THW is part of the German contribution to the European Mechanism and provides technical-humanitarian aid at international level. In the last six decades, THW has operated in more than 130 countries across the world by taking part in humanitarian immediate help, projects and relief supply transports.
