Exercises

With the help of flood protection walls, city centres are quickly and efffectively protected.

Preparation is everything, because accidents and catastrophes can neither be predicted nor planned. Therefore, it is important to be well trained and ready any time. In hundreds of thousands of exercise hours per year the volunteers of THW get up to speed for an operation. Because everything has to run like clockwork then.

Earthquake in Rhenania: 72-hour exercise for the SEEBA

An earthquake reaching a magnitude of 7.8 has severely damaged the towns of Wesel, Bocholt and Weeze. It is feared that the disaster will lead to several thousand victims – this was the exercise scenario of a team with around 60 experts from THW's Rapid Deployment Unit Search and Rescue Abroad (SEEBA).

OpEx Bravo: Communication in a crisis

Water, nutrition, medical care – after large-scale disasters, people depend on the humanitarian help of the international community. However, efficient help can only be provided when the operational teams coordinate their measures. In the context of the exercise OpEx Bravo, this week international IT and telecommunication specialists (ITC) will exercise the development and repair of communication networks for volunteers at THW’s National School in Neuhausen.

For two weeks the future volunteers practiced the basic skills and knowledge necessary to carry out missions.

Volunteerism as an export success

Voluntary and paid full-time operatives working together side by side: last weekend saw the successful conclusion of the eleventh Basic Training for civil protection volunteers in Tunisia. The two-week course was carried out with assistance from the THW and provided 45 trainee volunteers with the key skills they need for their future operations.
In the framework of the exercise, the Belgian government requested aid from the UN member states via the “Union Mechanism”

EUBelModEx 2015: Floods  in Belgium

Heavy rain fall, flooding and the release of dangerous substances – during the EU exercise “EUBelModEx 2015” in Antwerp (Belgium), which took place from 6th until 9th March, the participants trained transnational cooperation in several operational scenarios.
