World Humanitarian Day: THW in Action Internationally

"The THW helps countries to avoid or better cope with humanitarian disasters by preparing well for the dangers", says THW President Albrecht Broemme in the run-up to World Humanitarian Day on Saturday, 19th of August. The THW is in action in many parts of the world working to ensure reliable protection for the population. Full-time and volunteer THW operatives are currently active in Tunisia, northern Iraq, Jordan, the Western Balkans and in Turkey. They also contribute to EU activities.

Tried and Tested: SEEBA Meets UN Standards

Geneva. The Rapid Deployment Unit Search and Rescue Abroad (SEEBA) from the Technische Hilfswerk (THW) successfully renewed an important international classification, after a 48-hour large-scale exercise in Geneva. The exercise was designed to test whether the SEEBA unit continues to fulfil United Nations (UN) guidelines for rescue missions in the wake of earthquakes.
In the framework of the exercise, the Belgian government requested aid from the UN member states via the “Union Mechanism”

EUBelModEx 2015: Floods  in Belgium

Heavy rain fall, flooding and the release of dangerous substances – during the EU exercise “EUBelModEx 2015” in Antwerp (Belgium), which took place from 6th until 9th March, the participants trained transnational cooperation in several operational scenarios.

EU-VinCaB: Starting micro projects

The joint EU-project of civil protection and disaster management organisations as well as Red Cross societies for micro projects in South America and Kosovo is being launched. In the frame of the Volunteers in Capacity Building Projects (VinCaB), the first THW volunteer will leave for Columbia today.
One of the main concerns of THW is the close cooperation with the cicil protection organizations of neighbouring states.

Sought after service provider for the EU

Take 27 EU-member states, five other European countries and thousands of operational staff members. The result is the EU-Mechanism as a central instrument of civil protection at European level. THW’s personnel is always present. Again, to strengthen the cooperation between the players, numerous exercises are planned for 2013.

Final conference of the CBRN-project in Madrid

Operations after CBRN-incidents represent a special situation which differs from other crises. The invisible threat imposes a double physical and psychological pressure on the emergency staff. Nevertheless, psychosocial crisis management has been neglected so far. Therefore, a project, which is co-financed by the EU-Commission, has dealt with this topic since 2011under the auspices of THW. At the final conference in Madrid, from Tuesday to Thursday, more than 50 experts from 15 EU member states discussed the results gained to date.

Launch of international large-scale exercise in Croatia

In Croatia, operational staff from eleven countries have exercised an emergency case since Monday. As a project partner, THW takes part in the exercise. The scenario of the four-day large-scale exercise of the European Union is a flood around Zagreb. The aim of the exercise is the networking of civil protection organisations in Europe.

Ten years of EU-mechanism – ten years of European solidarity

For 10 years, the EU-Mechanism has guaranteed EU-wide cooperation in the field of civil protection. Today an international conference in Rome will take stock and establish the so-called EU-Mechanism for the future. Besides Ms Kristalina Georgieva, Commissioner for international cooperation, humanitarian aid and crisis reaction at the European Commission, THW-President Mr Albrecht Broemme will also take part in the event.
With its Swedish partner MSB, THW saw to the accommodation of 200 volunteers.

Slovenia: Ten countries, two EU-projects, one earthquake exercise

At the moment, operational staff from ten states are exercising the earthquake emergency case in Slovenia’s Logatec. Above all, the so-called exercise “Instrument for Preaccession” (IPA) aims at strengthening the cooperation between teams from the West Balkan and Turkey. THW does not only commit itself to IPA, but, together with Sweden and the Emergency Temporary Shelter-Module (ETS) in the framework of the EU-Mechanism, also provides the participants with accommodation.
Before the operation, logistics experts check whether the HCP-equipment and the clearing formalities for entry are complete.

HCP-Module Training in Leipzig

Heavy rain fall and floods in Europe – the High Capacity Pumping (HCP) modules of THW are used for such scenarios. Last weekend, the emergency case was practiced in Leipzig. For the first time, the operational staff of the HCP-module from the regional office of Saxony and Thuringia came together and demonstrated their competence during an exercise.

Explosion on Cyprus: THW sends out technology experts

On Saturday, THW sent out three experts to Cyprus for the technical and logistical support of an EU-team. Last Monday, several heavy explosions at the naval base of Evangelos Florakis damaged a nearby power station, which caused power cuts in many parts of the island.

Orion 2010: Quick Rescue for Trapped People

On Thursday, a fictitious aftershock signalled the conclusion of the European large-scale exercise Orion in Great-Britain. About 70 THW-volunteers of the Rapid Deployment Unit for Salvage Operations Abroad (SEEBA) practiced for three days, together with rescue personnel from eight nations, the search for trapped people. The operational command and control of the international teams was in the hands of Sweden.

Coordination and communication during an intervention, water for people in need, and rapid assistance with heavy-duty pumps – those are the subject areas that will be presented by the THW during the “MIC Seminar” at the Academy for Crisis Management, Emergency Planning and Civil Protection (AKNZ) from March 27 to 29. The Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Response (BBK) is organizing the workshop, which is taking place in the context of the German EU Council Presidency.
