THW: German Crisis Support Team Deployed to the USA

This Monday evening, the German federal government deployed a crisis support team to the USA to provide assistance to the German and European citizens affected by Hurricane Irma in Florida. Its members include ten THW operatives, both full-time staff and volunteers.

Tried and Tested: SEEBA Meets UN Standards

Geneva. The Rapid Deployment Unit Search and Rescue Abroad (SEEBA) from the Technische Hilfswerk (THW) successfully renewed an important international classification, after a 48-hour large-scale exercise in Geneva. The exercise was designed to test whether the SEEBA unit continues to fulfil United Nations (UN) guidelines for rescue missions in the wake of earthquakes.

THW supports civil monitoring mission in Columbia

New York/Bogotá. On Tuesday in New York, the Permanent Mission of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations signed an agreement to provide assistance to the UN Monitoring and Verification Mission in Columbia. The experts from the Technische Hilfswerk (THW) will set up the information and communication network for the UN Mission.
For more over a decade the THW cooperates with the WFP.

Worldwide networks of disaster relief assistance

After flooding, earthquakes or other disasters, rapid and specific assistance is vital. This is why the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has been working together with the THW and other German organisations as part of a Cluster Approach to providing relief.

Assistance for refugees and internally displaced people

In the Middle East, THW operatives have been providing assistance to refugees and internally displaced people (IDP) since 2013, and in 2014 they also started providing aid to refugees in Germany. Worldwide there are 60 million displaced people fleeing war, conflict and persecution. The numbers were never as high as they are today. Many have fled to Europe, but even more remain within the borders of their country – internally displaced.
In the framework of the exercise, the Belgian government requested aid from the UN member states via the “Union Mechanism”

EUBelModEx 2015: Floods  in Belgium

Heavy rain fall, flooding and the release of dangerous substances – during the EU exercise “EUBelModEx 2015” in Antwerp (Belgium), which took place from 6th until 9th March, the participants trained transnational cooperation in several operational scenarios.

OpEx Bravo: Communication in a crisis

Water, nutrition, medical care – after large-scale disasters, people depend on the humanitarian help of the international community. However, efficient help can only be provided when the operational teams coordinate their measures. In the context of the exercise OpEx Bravo, this week international IT and telecommunication specialists (ITC) will exercise the development and repair of communication networks for volunteers at THW’s National School in Neuhausen.

When calls for help do not reach their destination any more

From Neuhausen to Nepal: In our modern world, communication networks can reach even the most remote regions. However, they are vulnerable. World-wide, THW supports the preparation of emergency forces for the failure of regular communication networks after disasters.
