The THW TAST was fully integrated into a European Civil Protection Team (EUCPT), comprising nine experts from eight countries. Additionally, an Italian TAST supported a second EU Team. The purpose of the exercise was to train international cooperation, test new TAST equipment and to comprehensively advise Wicklow County on wildfire prevention and firefighting.
Wide range of tasks for the TAST
During the exercise, THW experts, together with EU experts, engaged with various organizations and authorities. They participated in various meetings with numerous national and regional entities, such as the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, the Dublin Fire Brigade, and the Irish Department of Defense. Here, the THW TAST presented its own capabilities and answered questions regarding staffing, funding, and the use of specialized equipment such as drones (UAVs).
Focus on logistics and technology
The German-Luxembourg TAST primarily supported the EUCPT in logistics, transport, and time management – for example, by coordinating different schedules and routes. In addition, it set up an IT and communications infrastructure, using its own Information and Communications Technology (ICT) kit. The team also tested the cooperation with the emergency.lu system, which provided valuable insights for both sides.
Joint report and valuable insights
Throughout the exercise, the EUCPT worked on a collective interim report, incorporating observations and analyses from all participants. The TAST contributed to this process by handling tasks such as information management and record-keeping. Both the German-Luxembourg and the Italian TAST units compiled their own reports, providing the EUCPT with multiple perspectives.
Strengthening european disaster relief
At the end of the exercise, all parties involved drew a positive summary. The combination of expertise, technical equipment, and organizational know-how had a key role in evaluating and further developing Ireland’s wildfire preparedness on an international scale. This successful collaboration once again highlights the importance of cross-border exercises to ensure a swift and coordinated response in real emergencies.
