THW supports civil monitoring mission in Columbia

New York/Bogotá. On Tuesday in New York, the Permanent Mission of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations signed an agreement to provide assistance to the UN Monitoring and Verification Mission in Columbia. The experts from the Technische Hilfswerk (THW) will set up the information and communication network for the UN Mission.

“The deployment of THW experts to support the peacekeeping mission of the United Nations is a new type of mission for the THW. The prerequisites for the deployment have already been achieved,” said THW President Albrecht Broemme. In Columbia, four IT specialists from the THW are currently providing assistance for all 35 sites of the UN Mission in the fields of radio and telecommunication, as well as computer and network technology. The 35 sites are the mission headquarters, eight regional offices and 26 “zones”.

In Berlin today, Federal Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel emphasised how the THW is making an important contribution to the stabilisation of Columbia with this mission. After the end of the armed conflict between government troops and the FARC rebels in Columbia, some 400 observers from the United Nations are now in the country. The further development of the Mission requires a comprehensive communications network and the appropriate equipment for working in the remote operational areas. This deployment of THW experts to Columbia is the first such mission carried out by a civilian organisation for the UN.

The Technische Hilfswerk (THW) is the volunteer-based operational civil protection organisation of the Federal Republic of Germany. Its work is based on the commitment of some 80,000 volunteers across the country, of whom about half are active operatives. With its specialist knowledge and a wide range of experience, the THW is often called upon to provide technical support to the fire department, police, aid organisations and others. Furthermore, on the instructions of the Federal Government, the THW is also deployed internationally. This includes technical and logistic aid provided as part of the Civil Protection Mechanism of the European Union and missions on behalf of UN organisations.
